The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, held in Dubai, witnessed history in the making as two players breached the 20 crore-mark for the first time in the richest T20 cricket league. Australian player Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in IPL history, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquiring the Australian pacer’s services for a whopping bid of INR 24.75 crores. This marked a significant moment in the league's history, with Starc's acquisition setting a new record.
Prior to Starc's record-breaking bid, his Australian teammate and captain of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2024 Winning team Pat Cummins was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for 20.50 crore, making him the second player to breach the 20 crore-mark in the IPL auction. This marked a significant shift in the league's financial landscape, with the two Australian players initiating the 20 crore club in the IPL.
There were 332 players from 13 countries go under the hammer, with 216 of them being Indian players. After player retention, releases, and trades, a maximum of 77 slots, including 30 overseas player quotas, were left to be filled up by the 10 teams combined at the IPL 2024 auction. However, 72 players were picked up during bidding, with only KKR and Rajasthan Royals (RR) opting not to go for their full quota of 25 players. All 30 overseas player berths were accounted for, marking a successful and eventful auction
In addition to Starc and Cummins, several other players commanded significant premiums at the IPL 2024 auction. New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell was acquired by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 14.00 crores, while Harshal Patel (INR 11.75 cr to Punjab Kings), Alzarri Joseph (INR 11.50 cr to Royal Challengers Bangalore), and Spencer Johnson (INR 10 cr to Gujarat Titans) were among the players who secured lucrative deals.
