Details Of Shooting

A suspect in an Atlanta shooting at a medical facility that left one person dead and four others injured has been taken into custody by police. Just after 12.30 p.m., the event happened on the 11th floor of the Northside hospital in midtown Atlanta, a business district featuring office buildings and high-rise residences. The injured victims were also women, aged 25, 39, 56, and 71, in addition to the victim, who was a lady in her thirties.

Suspect Deion Patterson has been named

After a protracted manhunt, Deion Patterson, 24, the alleged shooter, was apprehended on Wednesday night in the suburb of Cobb county. Patterson and his mother were attending the hospital for a scheduled appointment. Shortly after arriving, he started firing, and the shooting lasted for around two minutes, according to officials.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities said that "why he did what he did, all of that is still under investigation" and have failed to comment on any specifics of the inquiry or potential motive. Authorities are currently working with Patterson's family.

Connection to the Coast Guard

Patterson was a former employee of the US Coast Guard, according to the organisation. He "entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and most recently served as a second class electrician's mate." His active duty was terminated in January 2023. In the investigation, the agency is closely collaborating with the authorities.

Mother claims mental illness

Patterson's mother, Minyone Patterson, said that the medication he started taking on Friday after receiving it from the Veterans Affairs health system was the cause of "some mental instability going on" in her son.

Calls for gun control

Mass shootings and gun violence have devastated American cities. A mass shooting is any shooting that results in "at least four victims shot, either injured or killed, not including any shooter," according to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive. The GVA said on Wednesday that there had been 189 mass shootings in the US so far this year. "Unfortunately, no place in America will be safe from gun violence unless we... enact commonsense legislation that keeps firearms out of the hands of people who wish to commit harm," said Kris Brown, president of Brady, a national organization dedicated to preventing gun violence.

Reaction to the shooting

The Democratic senator from Georgia, Raphael Warnock, told his fellow senators in a passionate speech on Thursday that his own kids had been placed on lockdown earlier this afternoon. "This is banging on all of our doors, and I can actually feel it this afternoon. My own two children were placed on lockdown this afternoon, so I can feel it in my bones, added Warnock.

Impact on schools and public safety

Democratic Georgia senator Raphael Warnock also addressed the issue in a Senate speech, expressing his shock, sorrow, and anger over the incident. He revealed that even his own children had been on lockdown during the incident, emphasizing that gun violence is a problem affecting everyone in the country.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the need for effective measures to prevent gun violence and protect public safety.
