The President made the announcement to a small gathering of Democratic National Committee benefactors in Rancho Santa Fe, California, whilst speaking of advancements in the field of cancer research.

"He implored me to conduct his funeral oration," Biden announced, before pausing and adding, "Pardon me, that was inappropriate."

The President further revealed that he had spent time with Carter, the 39th President of the United States, and that his health had caught up with him. Despite this, medical professionals have found a way to prolong Carter's life beyond initial expectations, thanks to a medical breakthrough.

Over the years, Carter has experienced several health problems, including a struggle with cancer. In 2015, he announced his diagnosis of liver and brain cancer and began radiation treatment. He declared himself cancer-free later that year. In 2019, Carter underwent surgery after a series of severe falls led to various health issues.

Last month, the Carter Center declared that the former President had resolved to initiate hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. "Following a series of brief hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has resolved to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of further medical intervention," the center stated.

Carter, who is 98 years old, is currently the longest-living American President. The White House has confirmed that he and Biden have known each other since 1976. That year, Biden, who was then a Senator, became the first elected official outside of Georgia to endorse Carter's presidential candidacy. Carter won the election and served as the 39th President during the tumultuous late 1970s before losing the election to Ronald Reagan in 1980. In the ensuing decades, Carter worked to promote democracy and health initiatives across the world, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Tributes have poured in for the former President since he has entered hospice care, with many people reflecting on his significant contributions to various areas of society.
