2023 NBA Draft Lottery Watch: Rockets Primed for No. 1 Overall Pick

The Houston Rockets' Struggles in the 2023 NBA Season

The Houston Rockets are currently at the bottom of the Western Conference standings for the third consecutive season, with a record of 16-52. They have 14 games left in the 2023 regular season, and they are all but certain to finish in the bottom-five league-wide prior to the start of the postseason.

The Race for the No. 1 Overall Pick

The Rockets (along with the Detroit Pistons) are among the five teams with the greatest odds at earning the rights to incumbent No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. The other teams with 40 or more losses this year are the San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets, and Orlando Magic.

According to NBA.com, the new system for the 2023 Draft Lottery levels the odds at the top so that the three worst regular-season teams each have a 14 percent chance of winning the lottery. Currently, the Rockets would have joint-14 percent odds at the top overall selection.

The Rockets' Recent Draft History

In the 2022 draft, the Rockets selected Jabari Smith Jr. out of Auburn University with the No. 3 overall pick. In 2021, they won the No. 2 overall pick and selected Jalen Green from the NBA G League Ignite.

The Rockets' Upcoming Schedule

The Rockets are 3-14 in their last 17 games, including a recent 11-game losing streak. They still have tough games ahead, including facing eight teams in the top six of their respective conferences. This includes the defending champion Golden State Warriors on March 20 at home.

Despite their struggles, the Rockets have a chance to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, which could be a key part of their rebuilding process.
